Modern motherhood is relentless says mum of two boys, Anya Hayes. Mums are expected to be all things to all people and hold it together without the wheels falling off. But it can be hard to remain peaceful and balanced when your kids sit on your lap while you’re on the loo.

Anya is a health and wellbeing writer and editor, and founder of Mothers’ Wellness Toolkit. She's a Pilates teacher who specialises in pregnancy and postnatal and her 4th book, The SuperMum Myth has recently been launched.

Today Anya will empower you to stop feeling like a ‘rubbish mum’, by breaking down the unrealistic expectation of what it means to be a perfect mum. We address some of the big 'Mum Gremlins' like guilt, anxiety and self sabotage and talk about solutions to uproot negative emotions and thought patterns for good.

Anya knows that the best mum is the good-enough mum and teaches you to embrace your wonderful imperfection, so you'll start to see yourself in a kinder light.

When Sara Campin's daughter and son - now 5 and 2 - came along, Sara fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a mum. But although she’s incredibly grateful for this wonderful gift and loves her kids with so much intensity it hurts, the realities of parenting fell well short of her built up expectations, leaving her with feelings of disappointment and failure.

London-based Sara handled the high-stress corporate environment successfully, but motherhood proved to be rather more challenging. She suffered post natal anxiety and depression with both her children and still often feels like she's struggling to hold it all together. I can relate to that.

At the beginning of this year, she took time out of her fast-paced career to pause and consider her core values. She subsequently made the difficult decision to step off of the corporate ladder, to spend more time with her kids and follow her true passions. She retrained as a life and change coach and founded Keeping Mum Mighty where she helps mums increase their positive well-being and find greater joy in parenthood. She’s particularly passionate about guiding mums through the difficult transition periods of motherhood.

In today's honest and open conversation about the difficult side of motherhood, Sara shares her 5 greatest challenges in adapting from a sparkling career to motherhood. She has practical solutions for helping resolve the key issues that many mothers face, and by learning to love and nourish herself, whilst embracing and adapting to a completely different lifestyle, Sara's been able to find greater balance, harmony and happiness in her motherhood journey.

Woo Hoo. I can hardly believe it. I've reached my 100th episode. It's been challenging, intellectually demanding and stressful at times, but also stimulating, fulfilling and rewarding.

But before I tell you what's in store with this episode, I want to say a huge thank you to my amazing team of mums who busily work behind the scenes to bring you the podcast each week. You know who you are and I owe so much to you. Thank you. And of course, I need to thank you, my wonderfully devoted listener. Yes you. Thank you so much for supporting me by tuning in to the show.

So, on to today's episode. I wanted to bring you something a little different for episode number 100, so I have a very special guest lined up. It's .... wait for it ..... ME!

Yes, that's right. The tables have been turned and Naomi Light (one of my mum volunteers) is grabbing the mic and asking the questions. Just for fun, we agreed not to do any preparations ahead of the interview so all of her questions came at me cold. And boy, does Naomi know how to dig beneath the surface to get me to reveal the inner workings of my mind. In fact, I'm a bit worried she might steal my job!

I'm not going to tell you any more, I'll just leave you to listen for yourself.

My home is noisy. When my four kids burst through the door after school, it's loud. The chatter, the excitement, the bickering. Everyone's talking over everyone else and I can barely hear myself think.

But as much as I sometimes wish they had a mute button, what happens when the noise is no longer there? What happens when they're all grown up and leave home?

Jodi Silverman is an empty nester. Her daughter and son who are 22 and 19 have gone off to find their way in the world leaving her and her husband at home with their dog. But, although you grieve the loss, life-coach Jodi says that the world doesn't have to stop there. In fact, this is an opportunity for a new beginning.

With that teaching in mind, Jodi set up Moms Who Dare®, a community for mums with kids in high school and beyond looking to connect, share and thrive through having, or preparing for, an empty nest.

Whether you're an empty nester or not, this episode is a must listen because a lot of her advice rings true whatever stage of motherhood you're at. If nothing else, it's a great reminder to savour as much as you can in spite of the tantrums and tiredness, because one day the intense early years will be gone forever.

Mentally strong mums know that, by avoiding negative behaviours such as begrudging other people's success or dwelling on bad experiences, you'll be better equipped to overcome life's difficulties and become the best mum possible.

Amy Morin knows this more than most. Amy is a psychotherapist and foster parent who, amongst other life tragedies, became a widow at 23. Although her early adult life looked bleak, she knew she had to take everything she knew academically about mental strength and apply it to her own personal situation. Easier said than done.

But, rather than wallow in her own 'pity party', Amy scrapped up the pieces and went on the write the international bestseller, 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do and deliver a TED talk, The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong, which has been viewed more than 5 million times.

Today we delve deeply into Amy's recently launched second book, 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don’t Do. We pull apart some of the issues in the book like why you should stop putting your child at the centre of your universe, the importance of eradicating mum-guilt, and why understanding your values is critical to your parenting. You'll learn that by making the often tough choices, you'll help your child build mental muscle and develop into a healthy, strong adult.

Mum life is a rush.  Rushing to do the drop off so you can get to work on time. Rushing to get the children's dinner on the table before the hunger-monster rears its ugly head. Rushing to grab some groceries before your time without the kids is up. Rush. Rush. Rush.

But what if you could change gear and slow down a little?

That's what Brisbane mum Rachelle Glendon did two years ago when her son Max was born.

Realizing that she'd spent her life using activity and busyness to curb the emotional pain of a difficult childhood, Rachelle wanted to change the status quo.

Emerging from a painful period of loneliness in the time after her son was born, Rachelle knew she needed to change her priorities. She confronted her emotions head on and fought the stigma of being seen as lazy or boring and chose life in the slow lane. And she lives a far more rewarding and fulfilled life because of it.

Rachelle now helps other mums to slow down and shares her story, alongside hints and tips on how to live a slower life, has a video blog on YouTube and through her website Glendon Family Diaries.

When I hear the words Occupational Therapist, I think of someone who helps you recover from injury through a rehabilitation program. It never occurred to me that they could help mums in any other way. But I learned that because Occupational Therapists specialise in seeing the human body as a “whole”, they can help you achieve optimal health and wellbeing which allows you to live your best life.

Mum of two, Sarah Hausler is the owner of Bloom Wellbeing and has been an Occupational Therapist for 16 years in Adelaide, Australia. Through her work, and in her personal life, Sarah's seen first hand the impact that pregnancy, childbirth and parenting has on the emotional and physical wellbeing of mums. Since becoming a mum herself, she now focuses on helping mothers to participate in meaningful activities to support a holistic approach to wellness.

In this episode we delve deeper into how Occupational Therapy can support mums. We discuss a whole range of issues including the emotional impact of sleep deprivation, and what to do when you experience a change in life priorities. We also talk about difficult topics like how to recover emotionally following a distressing or traumatic childbirth experience and the challenges of raising a child with an illness or developmental disorder.

This was an eye-opening conversation for me which has broadened my knowledge of the world of Occupational Therapy.

Being mindful in your day-to-day life as a busy mum can be tricky. You understand, abstractly, how beneficial it is, but taking that final step to put it into action can be a struggle. I get it. I find it incredibly difficult amongst the noise of our home, the busyness of getting through each day, and the wall to wall chores than never subside, to find space to be mindful.

That's why I enjoyed my conversation with mindfulness teacher Michelle Gale, the author of the brand new book, “Mindful Parenting in a Messy World” and host of a podcast of the same name. Why? Because Michelle brings mindfulness right into your own kitchen while hurriedly serving up dinner and shouting through the house that you'll be there to wipe his bottom just as soon as you've saved the sausages from burning.

Michelle brings the message that life is messy. But it's right in the midst of this messiness that you'll find your greatest potential for growth and transformation. In a practical and down-to-earth way, Michelle teaches you that the act of parenting really begins with parenting yourselves by being in tune with what is happening, right here, right now.

Today Michelle will help you through the rough spots so you'll react less, connect more and feel at ease, so you can wholeheartedly embrace your messy life.

Having a teenager in the house can be a challenge to say the least. It's so frustrating watching your teen make poor choices and roll their eyes at your suggestions. The battles to get them to make better choices get constantly ignored, disrupts the balance of your home and jeopardises your relationship with your child.

Enter Claire Ketchum. She has two teenagers of her own and has devoted most of her life to living and working with teens. Through her work, Claire knows that teens are far more likely to listen to a teacher, coach or friend, rather than their parent. Therefore, Claire bridges that gap in her work as a Stress Less Coach for Teens and her vast experience has given her a deep understanding of how to motivate teens.

In this episode, Claire will show you how she helps teens see and value their strengths and to be open to support in areas where they struggle. You'll find out how she gets them out of the chronic stress loop for good, so they can create healthy habits, manage expectations better, experience more success and remain happy and healthy in school and beyond.

By following her strategies, you'll discover a way to encourage your teen to create health habits in a way that makes your teen feel supported rather than judged. This will help you have a more harmonious home and get your relationship with your teen back on the right path.

Your hopes, dreams and priorities change once you have children. Your career, that once offered personal validation before becoming a mum, no longer cuts it now children are on the scene. So how do you figure out exactly what you want from life, and more importantly, how can you make it a reality?

Actor, writer, speaker and coach, Nicky Raby will help you do just that with some careful planning and down-to-earth advice. In this episode, Nicky talks about how life has changed since having her 21 month old son, and how she juggles the unpredictable world of acting around motherhood.

It’s clear that Nicky's grabbing life by the horns, and as a professional coach she helps other mums navigate similar changes. While it’s great that there are loads of self-development options available, Nicky takes the practical view that you can’t meditate for half a day and send off a couple of emails. Instead, she offers practical advice and suggestions to help you to find your own space, on your own terms.

Today Nicky will open you up to the possibility of  'and' rather than being closed off by 'but'. It shouldn’t be ‘successful but single’, and it shouldn’t be ‘creative but poor’. You can have both ‘creative and successful’. And it's OK to blend together your multiple passions to create a career and life that works for you. Why let yourself be limited by the expectations of others when you can fly, just like Nicky.

Imagine leaving your home in the morning and returning to find out that your 9 year old son had experimented with fire and blown up your house.

The house is burnt out. Your son is fighting for his life in hospital covered in burns on 100% of his body. And you have four other children to care for.

That 9 year old boy was John O’Leary. John is now a husband, father of four; three boys and a girl. He's the #1 bestselling author of the book ON FIRE and a highly sought inspirational speaker.

In this incredible story, John - in my first dad-only episode - talks about how he and his family pulled through this unthinkable tragedy. The strength of character, resilience and determination of his mother. And how this life altering event changed John's world in such a positive way, he has dedicated his life helping others overcome their challenges and live inspired lives.

Through his story, John will "liberate you from excuses, destructive cynicism, limiting beliefs, broken relationships, and lousy results" because like he says, " you can’t always choose the path you walk in life, but you can always choose the manner in which you walk."

The world of a teenager is a mystery to me, and since my eldest is only 8, I'm going to keep my head buried in the sand for a few years yet. But if you do have teens in the house, this episode is for you.

Australia's most sought-after Motivational Speakers, Sonya Karras and Sacha Kaluri have five children between them and have been working with teenagers in schools and hosting live events for 17 years. They are Australia's leading experts in a wide range of adolescent and family issues, and set up Australian Teenage Expo, the country's largest youth educational event where they have hosted more that 55,000 people in the last 5 years.

As a result of working with young people on a daily basis, they realised there are two major elements of a teenagers life that comes into full bloom at the same time. Their social life and thoughts about their career. Sonya and Sacha's experience and expertise in both these fields, led them to publish 'The Two Worlds of a Teenager’, which we talk about today.

You may not think that partying and career go hand-in-hand for teenagers, but in today's Social Media-driven world, they have a huge impact on each other. Today's episode confirms that "the more choices, options and information a teenager is given, the more likely they are to make positive choices, especially when faced with a tricky situation."

Jennifer Bronsnick of The Mindful Family knows what it’s like to struggle in motherhood. Mum of three girls, Jennifer suffered post partum depression when her third daughter was born.

But Jennifer had a powerful weapon to slay the beast. A positive mindset. An attitude that told her “I know this isn’t forever” and “What can I learn from this?”

Author of ‘Mindful Mommy: 10 Secrets for Healing your Mind, Body and Spirit after Having a Baby’, Jennifer now helps mums turn a challenge into their greatest gift. She believes that the obstacles you face - and boy, motherhood brings about plenty of those - gives you an opportunity to learn and grow, rather than becoming something that you try to avoid.

In this action-packed episode, you’ll learn how to become more resilient and bounce back from overwhelming pressure and anxiety. You’ll find out how to deal with chronic stress and past trauma. And you’ll know how to handle the negative emotions that burden you.

Jennifer advocates that motherhood is about personal development, and we learn as much from our children as they learn from us. She says, “There’s no such thing as an ideal mother. Every child needs a different mother and we’re the exact mum they need us to be”

Ali Katz is the very first guest to make a second appearance on my podcast. In Episode 61, Ali wowed us with the concept that if you care for yourself first, you can better care for your family. This was the message of her first book, Hot Mess to Mindful Mom: 40 Ways to Find Balance and Joy in Your Every Day.

Ali, who is the mum of two boys aged 12 and 10 and a mindfulness coach and meditation teacher, made such an impact when she first appeared on the podcast that I couldn't resist inviting her back to talk about her latest book. Get the Most out of Motherhood: A Hot Mess to Mindful Mom Parenting Guide launches, hot off the press, in less than a weeks time.

Now you understand that when you're calmer and more balanced you're a better mum, you're ready to take the next step. Ali teaches you how to push the inner work out into your home and embrace your best self while parenting. That way you can strengthen your relationships with your children and partner, create family rituals that your children will remember long after they've left home, and teach your children how to follow in your footsteps to becoming more mindful.

Sex and intimacy is the last thing on your mind now you're a mum. By the time you fall into bed after another exhausting day juggling balls and fulfilling demands, being a goddess between the sheets is probably fairly low on your list of priorities.

In today’s podcast you'll understand why things have changed between you and your partner, and gain an insight into why you feel disconnected. But you'll also learn how to reignite the sparkle and start to feel the way you did before children came on the scene.

My guest today is Isiah McKimmie.

Isiah is a Sydney-based Relationship Therapist and Sexologist who has been helping couples maintain better relationships for over seven years. She helps them discover deep love, soulful intimacy and whole-hearted sex. Isiah believes that intimacy and relationships are deeply connected to our overall happiness and that, if you have the right foundation stones in place, a happy, passionate and loving relationship is possible for everyone.

Today Isiah will make you want to jump back into bed with your hubby because of your personal connection rather than simply the act of having sex. We consider intimacy from your partners perspective and how bringing back kindness, respect and understanding to your relationship may be the key to reigniting the passion.

We address the negative association that society has about marriage and children wreaking your sex life, and the impact that your perception of your body has on your relationship.

And we talk about the practicalities of making time to reconnect, why you might just have your priorities in the wrong order and realistic tips for maintaining a loving relationship. We also delve into how to fit time to be a couple into your busy life, and why scheduling in intimacy and sex can actually be fun, rather than contrived.

I am delighted to have Isiah on my show today. She'll help you realise why sex is so important to your relationship and why a great connection with your partner starts with yourself. You'll gain an appreciation that by dedicating time to having a healthy, intimate relationship you'll see the energy of your entire family change. Best of all, you're role modelling for your children's future relationships and giving them the precious gift of a happier family unit.

Go Conquer Motherhood!

Dec 17, 2018
Every mother has a pre-conceived idea of what pregnancy and parenthood will be like. But often the reality doesn't match the dream and it turns out to be completely different to the fluffy-bunny rabbit world that the media has created.

In today’s episode you'll get an insight into the mind of a mum who penned her motherhood experiences into a series of diary entries and modern-day poems. The thoughts and feelings of one mother, captured the hearts and minds of millions of others, who all nodded along in hearty agreement.

My guest today is SuperMum, Hollie McNish.

Hollie lives near Cambridge, UK with her seven year old daughter. An eternal writer and poet, Hollie naturally chronicled her observations of being a mum as a way to vent both her joy and her frustration of motherhood. Little did she know that her work would one day be published or that she would become an Internet sensation. Her book, 'Nobody Told Me' recently won her the highly-aclaimed Ted Hughes award and her YouTube channel, where she reads her poetry, has a following over over 4 million.

'Nobody Told Me' tracks Hollie's journey from the time she took her very first pregnancy test, to the day she dropped her 3 year old daughter to pre-school for the very first time. Through it, she explicitly shares her view on a whole array of mummy matters from the embarrassment of breast feeding in public to the loss of her identity. From exhaustion so overwhelming it lead her to 'cry hidden in loos' to her scorn of being branded as having 'baby brain'.

In this no-holds-barred episode, Hollie and I talk at length about our breasts flicking from being something sexual into being something functional and back again, to dealing with having sex again post-birth, and to feeling isolated and lost after having a child.

And the pièce de résistance? Hollie does an exclusive reading of my favourite poem from her book called, 'What's My Name Again' which leaves me brushing away the tears from the raw nerve that it hits head on.

I am so excited to welcome Hollie to my show today. I'm not a poetry lover, but this stuff you'll be eating up. She gives us a refreshingly real-life view of motherhood. Frank, honest and forthright from pregnancy to pre-school, which will leave you feeling like at last somebody finally gets it and actually gives a damn.

Life is busy and life is stressful, and there are times when your health (understandably) gets neglected. From reaching for another piece of chocolate or finishing the bottle of wine, through to not exercising enough or getting adequate sleep, it's easy to fall into the trap of failing to take care of yourself.

Guilty as charged. I've got my hand up to all of those.

In today’s podcast, you'll find out how unhealthy habits can affect your health, and what it takes to overcome the bad habits and create new ones that will benefit your body and mind.

My guest today is SuperMum, Alice Bingham.

Alice lives in Brisbane, Australia with her husband and 20 month old son, Cruz. At the time of the interview she was 37 weeks pregnant with her second child, and has since given birth to a beautiful baby girl at the beginning of July.

In Alice's nursing days before becoming a mum, she observed a huge number of patients who were suffering illness as a direct result of an unhealthy lifestyle. Alice looked in the mirror and reflected on her own life. She too was overweight and not in the best health. This was the trigger that Alice needed to start a lifelong journey to good health.

Starting with an 8 week healthy eating challenge, and moving on to workouts, Alice lost an incredible 3 stone (21kg). But that was just the beginning. Health is so much more to Alice than just weight loss and progress, it's a lifestyle. It's about being present, self love, delicious healthy food and a strong and healthy mind.

Alice shares her progress, her stories, and her ups and downs of creating a healthy life at Alice in Healthyland. She writes a successful blog and has more than 30,000 Instagram followers who are inspired to love their bodies, get healthy and build mindfulness into their everyday lives. Her online followers have been beside her through weight loss, pregnancies, and life as the mum of a toddler ... and now a newborn.

In today’s episode Alice talks about how to stay motivated to keep healthy, even on the really tough, sleep deprived days. That no mistake is a ‘failure’, rather an opportunity to learn and grow. And that even though self care is difficult to fit in, the reward will always be worth the effort.

I'm so happy to have Alice on my show today. She'll remind you of the importance of taking care of yourself, the wonderfully purging effect of a good old cry, and shares some great tips on how to work out and eat healthily when time is short and you're running on empty.

Feeling under the weather? Never mind. Sick bug? So what, the kids still need to eat. Unwell? Chin up. Soldier on.

We mums battle through injuries, viruses and feeling like dirt, because .... well, we have to. But what happens when you get really sick and suddenly you have to stop rushing around at 100 miles an hour so you can focus on getting better again.

In today’s episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday we talk about dealing with a serious illness, the toll it has on your emotional and physical wellbeing, and accepting help when you just can’t go it alone.

My guest today is SuperMum, Lisa Turner.

Lisa and her husband live in London, UK with their son and daughter who are 9 and 4.  In 2013, when her youngest child was just 14 months old, Lisa discovered a lump in her breast. She put it down to the affects of breast feeding, but it turned out to be far more sinister. Grade 3 breast cancer.

In the year that followed, family life was turned upside down with a rollercoaster of mastectomies, chemotherapy and dealing with the reality of her illness. The journey was painful and exhausting as Lisa and her family endured the dark times of fighting her illness and raising a young family at the same time.

Lisa is open and honest about the hardships of fighting cancer. The heart-wrenching inability to pick up her children following her double mastectomy. Not having the energy to be part of family life after debilitating chemotherapy. And wondering whether she would live to see her children grow up.

But fast forward 4 years, and Lisa is in remission and living a better life. She now looks back at the experience and draws on the positive things that breast cancer brought with it. The friends and community who rallied around to lend a hand. The love and support her husband gave her and their children. And the new perspective to life that her illness has given her.

But most of all, Lisa wants to share the message that examining your breasts and catching any problems early could save your life.

In today’s episode we learn of Lisa’s incredible strength when hearing the worst possible news and how she helped her children understand what was wrong with mummy. We laugh about the perils of wearing a wig in public and even compare the marvels of Lisa's pert reconstructed breasts verses my saggy post breast-feeding ones.

I am delighted to have Lisa on my show today. She bravely shares her story of dealing with serious illness when you have a young family, the importance of being raw and honest in your darkest hour, and how to see your experiences as a way to add value to your life as a mum so you always hold dear every precious moment.

Stress is an everyday part of life in a busy modern world. And I don't know about you, but I think being a mum takes stress to a whole new level. Whether it’s physical stress, emotional stress or stress brought on by overwhelm and exhaustion, I've never felt pressure as intense as I have during the mummy years.

In today’s episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday you'll find out why mums have so much stress to deal with, how your body reacts to stress, and why the 'fight or flight' response has spiralled out of control. But never fear, because you'll also learn how to combat stress, learn some simple techniques to manage difficult situations, and hear about techniques to improve your overall well-being.

My guest today is SuperMum, Giselle Monbiot.

Giselle is a Stress Specialist, Cognitive Hypnotherapist and a Well-being course designer and facilitator who lives in London, UK with her husband and 3 children who are 9, 5 & 3. Giselle's stress levels peaked when her 3rd child was born. She found herself shouting at her kids, having difficulties sleeping and fell into bad habits of eating the wrong types of food. She was regularly ill, had a constant feeling of anxiety in the pit of her stomach, and dreaded the future.

As a trained therapist Giselle knew she could handle her stress response better. After all, she was teaching stress management to her clients but not applying them to her own life. Fed up with the inner conflict, heightened stress response and bad health, she made a promise to herself to be free from stress and anxiety. She said, "I wanted to enjoy my children, my life and know that I could regain a sense of peace within".

Giselle started to practice what she preached and incorporated the stress management tools she used with her clients into her own life. She learned new relaxation techniques and explored her behaviour patterns and response mechanisms. Over time, Giselle found her old self and started to feel alive again.

And now she'll teach you to feel alive too. In today’s episode you'll learn to recognise the ways that stress affects you so you can fight back. And you'll discover the small steps and the simple techniques you can use to live a less stressful life, which in turn will make your role as a mum more enjoyable.

I am so pleased to welcome Giselle to my show today. She has dedicated her life to teaching women how to regain faith in themselves. Stress and anxiety won't be the norm. Instead, she'll help you find calmness, emotional control and a new-found feeling of energy. Get ready to feel alive again.

Your natural mothering instinct usually means you put your childrens' needs before your own. But sometimes that can be to your - and their - detriment. Looking after yourself first helps you to be a better parent and a more positive role model to your children.

In today’s episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday we'll be talking about the huge impact that your own physical and mental wellbeing has on the way you parent. I for one know that on the days where I've got my head together and feel calm, happy and rested, I'm a far better mummy. And, as if by magic, those are the days when my children respond to me more positively. It's a win-win situation.

My guest today is SuperMum, Clare Crew.

Clare lives in Adelaide, South Australia. She is an Educator, Speaker and Mum to 3 children aged 5, 8 and 9. Clare always wanted to work with children and is qualified in neuro-development. She earned a degree in Early Childhood Education followed by a Masters Degree in Special Education.

When Clare had her own children she thought that, with all the learning and experience she had working with children, she would have parenthood sorted. But her children taught her that there are some things you just can't learn from books.

Parenthood led Clare on a journey of transformation where she realised that the well-being of mums is just as important as the well-being of children. In juggling her children with a small age gap, practising self-care was a critical component in making sure she became the parent she wanted to be.

Clare now uses her academic knowledge and hands-on experience to empower parents and teachers with real-life strategies for supporting children's success. She does this through her blog, via the Thriving Children Podcast, and in her consulting work.

In today's episode, you'll learn that your own mindset and well-being is a fundamental part of being a great parent. By making yourself a priority rather than always putting yourself last and making do with the dregs, not only are you thriving as a mum, you're helping your children to thrive too.

I'm delighted to welcome Clare to my show today. She teaches us that, whilst there's no correct formula to parenting, looking at your own needs and answering them, helps you serves your entire family in the most productive and successful way.

Go Conquer Motherhood!

I was born into a traditional, 2.4-children-style family where Dad went out to work and Mum stayed at home. And I've mirrored that 'normal' set-up now I have a family of my own. Mum plus dad equals children. Simple. But because of that, it's easy to be blinkered to other family structure. 40 years later, blended, same sex, solo parent and adoptive families are equally celebrated.

In today's episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday we'll be talking about unconventional families. Growing up in a same sex family with two mums; bucking the trend of the traditional 1980's expectation; adopting children of a different heritage; and how unique family set-ups work in todays world.

My guest today is Jesse Toksvig-Stewart.

Jesse grew up in Surrey in the UK with her two Mums, Sandi and Peta, and her siblings, Megan and Theo. In the late '80s this family structure was seen as unconventional. But to Jesse, it was normal. And it was all she knew. Later in her childhood when her mums split up, Jesse and her siblings divided their time between the two households. Her family has recently been extended even more, when Sandi remarried another woman, and gave Jesse a new step-sister.

The family is close, and Jesse still lives near her mums house, with her boyfriend, Adam. They have recently warmly welcomed a sister from Pakistan heritage into their fold, whom Peta has adopted.

Wanting to map the early years of her step-sister, adopted sister, and little nephew in a baby book, Jesse realised they only catered for the conventional. Looking back at her own baby record book, she saw it was full of crossed out words and hand written headings.

Jesse was saddened that although times have changed and the world is more accepting, the printed world was lagging behind. There was no memory book that catered for her own special family, so she set out to create her own. A baby record book that celebrated her new sister’s unique place in their family, and in the world.

Alongside her illustrator friend, Kat Willott, they created an open record book called ‘My Amazing Family and Me' to welcome all children to families, no matter how they arrive, when they arrive, or how unique their family setup is.

In today's episode, we go deep on everything from same sex parents, adopted children and dealing with the sideways glances, to discussing the issues that children from unique family circumstances face, separation anxiety, and how we can all help out in the way we respond to them.

I'm delighted to welcome Jesse to my show today. She teaches us that families are built on love, not genetics and that understanding, tolerance and acceptance should be at the root of all families, no matter how unconventional their beginnings.
