My home is noisy. When my four kids burst through the door after school, it's loud. The chatter, the excitement, the bickering. Everyone's talking over everyone else and I can barely hear myself think.

But as much as I sometimes wish they had a mute button, what happens when the noise is no longer there? What happens when they're all grown up and leave home?

Jodi Silverman is an empty nester. Her daughter and son who are 22 and 19 have gone off to find their way in the world leaving her and her husband at home with their dog. But, although you grieve the loss, life-coach Jodi says that the world doesn't have to stop there. In fact, this is an opportunity for a new beginning.

With that teaching in mind, Jodi set up Moms Who Dare®, a community for mums with kids in high school and beyond looking to connect, share and thrive through having, or preparing for, an empty nest.

Whether you're an empty nester or not, this episode is a must listen because a lot of her advice rings true whatever stage of motherhood you're at. If nothing else, it's a great reminder to savour as much as you can in spite of the tantrums and tiredness, because one day the intense early years will be gone forever.

Mentally strong mums know that, by avoiding negative behaviours such as begrudging other people's success or dwelling on bad experiences, you'll be better equipped to overcome life's difficulties and become the best mum possible.

Amy Morin knows this more than most. Amy is a psychotherapist and foster parent who, amongst other life tragedies, became a widow at 23. Although her early adult life looked bleak, she knew she had to take everything she knew academically about mental strength and apply it to her own personal situation. Easier said than done.

But, rather than wallow in her own 'pity party', Amy scrapped up the pieces and went on the write the international bestseller, 13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do and deliver a TED talk, The Secret of Becoming Mentally Strong, which has been viewed more than 5 million times.

Today we delve deeply into Amy's recently launched second book, 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don’t Do. We pull apart some of the issues in the book like why you should stop putting your child at the centre of your universe, the importance of eradicating mum-guilt, and why understanding your values is critical to your parenting. You'll learn that by making the often tough choices, you'll help your child build mental muscle and develop into a healthy, strong adult.

Mum life is a rush.  Rushing to do the drop off so you can get to work on time. Rushing to get the children's dinner on the table before the hunger-monster rears its ugly head. Rushing to grab some groceries before your time without the kids is up. Rush. Rush. Rush.

But what if you could change gear and slow down a little?

That's what Brisbane mum Rachelle Glendon did two years ago when her son Max was born.

Realizing that she'd spent her life using activity and busyness to curb the emotional pain of a difficult childhood, Rachelle wanted to change the status quo.

Emerging from a painful period of loneliness in the time after her son was born, Rachelle knew she needed to change her priorities. She confronted her emotions head on and fought the stigma of being seen as lazy or boring and chose life in the slow lane. And she lives a far more rewarding and fulfilled life because of it.

Rachelle now helps other mums to slow down and shares her story, alongside hints and tips on how to live a slower life, has a video blog on YouTube and through her website Glendon Family Diaries.

When I hear the words Occupational Therapist, I think of someone who helps you recover from injury through a rehabilitation program. It never occurred to me that they could help mums in any other way. But I learned that because Occupational Therapists specialise in seeing the human body as a “whole”, they can help you achieve optimal health and wellbeing which allows you to live your best life.

Mum of two, Sarah Hausler is the owner of Bloom Wellbeing and has been an Occupational Therapist for 16 years in Adelaide, Australia. Through her work, and in her personal life, Sarah's seen first hand the impact that pregnancy, childbirth and parenting has on the emotional and physical wellbeing of mums. Since becoming a mum herself, she now focuses on helping mothers to participate in meaningful activities to support a holistic approach to wellness.

In this episode we delve deeper into how Occupational Therapy can support mums. We discuss a whole range of issues including the emotional impact of sleep deprivation, and what to do when you experience a change in life priorities. We also talk about difficult topics like how to recover emotionally following a distressing or traumatic childbirth experience and the challenges of raising a child with an illness or developmental disorder.

This was an eye-opening conversation for me which has broadened my knowledge of the world of Occupational Therapy.
